In the early 80’s I lived in a flat overlooking the wall. We could see the East German guards from our window and frequently waved at them. Some waved back, others pointed their guns at us.

Remember the night it came down. Working on the sports desk at The Telegraph and the first edition arrived with it on the cover. One of the few times I wished I reported news rather than sport.

I studied International Relations and had just started a job as a BBC journalist. When the wall fell, I was reporting on Loo of the Year for Radio Cumbria.

A piece of the Berlin Wall in Cape Town, South Africa – given to president Nelson Mandela in 1996 on his official visit to Germany. It’s symbolising the tearing down of dividing “walls” and the building up trust. pic.twitter.com/gpyhP9R6PY

The other day…where once the #Berlinwall ran now marked as a brick trail & sections which are still around Berlin. I even came across a section in Seattle. pic.twitter.com/CWa6doonAz

Being born a few years after it came down, my father did tape it solely to show his future child.
I’m glad he did. It had a profound impact on how I view the world.

While of course most life-altering for East-Germans it was also very exciting for Westerners to be able to explore East-Germany. I got a speeding ticket. Had no East-German cash. The cop was completely at a loss but would not accept Western cash, which was much more valuable.

So he wrote me a note that demanded that I would transfer the money for the ticket to the East-German central bank. Shortly after this bank an its state was no more. I still have the note.
