Numazu city on the Pacific coast of Japan is already prepared for an earthquake emergecy situation. The Tokai region and mainly Shizuoka Prefecture is hit by disastrous earthquakes every 100 to 150 years. The last one came in 1854. With 150 years of calm, the region is considered to have accumulated the largest earthquake energy on the Pacific coast of Japan. When the next big Tokai earthquake, a two- to 10-metre-high tsunami is expected to strike Numazu city. Many counter measures have been taken to protect the area from the disaster. Σφοδρή σεισμική δόνηση μεγέθους 7,5 βαθμών της κλίμακας Ρίχτερ, σύμφωνα με την αναθεωρημένη αποτίμηση, έπληξε την βόρεια Ιαπωνία, ανακοίνωσε η Ιαπωνική Μετεωρολογική Υπηρεσία εκδίδοντας ταυτόχρονα και ειδοποίηση για τσουνάμι τα κύματα του οποίου μπορεί να φθάσουν τα 3 μέτρα.
Ο σεισμός σημειώθηκε στις 16.53 τοπική ώρα στον Ειρηνικό, ανοικτά της επαρχίας Ιγουάτε.
Η δόνηση ήταν τόσο σφοδρή που συγκλόνισε τα ψηλά κτήρια μέχρι το Τόκιο, σε απόσταση εκαντοντάδων χιλιομέτρων.
