Στο ερωτηματολόγιο του Προυστ για λογαριασμό του Vanity Fair ρώτησαν μεταξύ άλλων τον David Bowie:

Ποια αρετή προτιμάτε περισσότερο σε έναν άνδρα; Τη δυνατότητα του να επιστρέφει βιβλία.

Ο Bowie ήταν δεινός αναγνώστης και χανόταν μέσα στα βιβλία. Το 2013 μάλιστα ανάρτησε στη σελίδα του στο Facebook τους 100 καλύτερους τίτλους που έχει διαβάσει ποτέ. Αν τους ρίξετε μια ματιά θα δείτε πως δεν είχε κάποια ιδιαίτερη προτίμηση σε είδος. Στη λίστα μπορείτε να βρείτε Δάντη, Όργουελ, Κέρουακ, Τζούλιαν Μπαρνς, Κάφκα, Καμύ και πολλούς άλλους. Πάντα θα είχε αξία η συγκεκριμένη λίστα, αλλά αποκτά ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα, τώρα που μετά την ανακοίνωση του θανάτου του, σε ηλικία 69 ετών, κάθε πληροφορία για τη ζωή του Bowie αποκτά πολύτιμη υπόσταση.
